Grade 6 Hatchet Camp

The Grade 6s enjoyed a two day survival camp based on the experiences of the character Brian Robeson in the book "Hatchet" written by Gary Paulson.

As the bell sounded at 13:20 on Friday afternoon, 11 average Grade 6 learners changed into their “old clothes” and takkies and met in the assembly area to be addressed for the very first Lanner House Hatchet Camp. Little did they know that less than 24 hours later, they would leave the school premises as true survivors! The children were split into two teams, given a survival kit and sent to paint a team flag. The “Red Devils” and “Last Survivors” then embarked on a treasure hunt, solving riddles in order to find the following location and finally, the treasure! During a nail- biting final round, Russell Hill eventually managed to dig up the treasure of candy canes for the “Red Devils.”

Mr Wansbury then took the children to the next activity which involved “hunting” for their supper. Paper animals were shot at by each team member who was then able to claim the attached jar which contained either money or other survival-type items. The money was used to barter for goods and food at the “outdoor shop.” It was interesting to see the team members working together and choosing sensibly whilst sticking to a time limit and budget constraints.

Next was the shelter- building. The teams set off to cut down alien trees and bring them back to camp to build sturdy and weather- resistant shelters. The teams then settled down with their tin foil, pots and spices to cook their food for the night: rice, a whole chicken and some fish. These were the items that Brian Robeson, the character from “Hatchet” had to cook and eat during his many months alone in the Canadian wilderness….minus the rice…and the pots…and the tin foil….and the spices. The children had a chance to reflect on the many basic privileges that we all take for granted and a few even mentioned that they would prefer a simpler way of life to their cellphones and playstations! (This of course, made my year!)

After playing numerous team- building games, telling campfire stories, toasting marshmallows and surviving a very dark night walk, the Grade 6s collapsed into bed for popcorn and a movie. The next morning they washed their dishes, prepared breakfast and cleaned up their campsite. All in all, the camp was a successful, multi-faceted learning programme which also turned out to be a lot of fun!
